Microbiologics Develops Listeria innocua Controls with Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) Markers
Saint Cloud, Minn. - Microbiologics, Inc. has launched Listeria innocua in its UV-BioTAG™ format, a product line of quality control (QC) microorganisms expressing the Green Fluorescent Protein reporter (GFP) from a stable chromosomal integration. Designed for QC testing in food microbiology laboratories, UV-BioTAG™ cultures visibly fluoresce under ultraviolet (UV) light making them easily distinguishable from naturally occurring strains that may be isolated from food samples. Microbiologics is the only provider of Listeria innocua GFP controls in a ready-to-use format.
Control strains used in food testing laboratories may inadvertently contaminate food samples, leading to false-positive results and potentially significant financial and regulatory consequences. “Food testing laboratories must meet tight testing deadlines and comply with evolving regulations while ensuring their products are free of dangerous pathogens and safe for consumers,” stated Brad Goskowicz, Microbiologics Chief Executive Officer. “Our team developed Listeria innocua GFP controls to help laboratories quickly, reliably, and cost-effectively determine whether a positive test result is due to control strain cross-contamination or a different source.”
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates Listeria causes 1,600 illnesses and 260 deaths in the United States annually. In January 2017, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a draft guidance for industry in the control of Listeria monocytogenes in ready-to-eat foods. The draft guidance provides recommendations for eliminating L. monocytogenes’ introduction to facilities by personnel, equipment, and supplies, as well as continuously monitoring facilities for presence of the pathogen. UV-BioTAG™ L. innocua GFP controls can be used as reliable surrogates to L. monocytogenes in food testing laboratories concerned about introducing this highly pathogenic strain into their facilities.
UV-BioTAG™ is available in two test-ready formats. UV-BioTAG™ Vial kits contain six vials of one lyophilized microorganism pellet (six pellets per kit) which are rehydrated in a sterile fluid, such as saline, and then plated on growth medium. UV-BioTAG™ Swab kits contain six all-in-one devices including a lyophilized microorganism pellet, ampoule of rehydration fluid, and a swab, which allows for direct inoculation of growth medium.
